  4.      Language is metaphor in the sense that it not only stores 
  5. but translates experience from one mode into another. Money 
  6. is metaphor in the sense that it stores skill and labor and also 
  7. translates one skill into another. But the principle of exchange 
  8. and translation, or metaphor, is in our rational power to 
  9. translate all of our senses into one another. This we do every 
  10. instant of our lives. But the price we pay for special 
  11. technological tools, whether the wheel or the alphabet or radio, 
  12. is that these massive extensions  of sense constitute closed  
  13. systems. Our private senses are not closed systems but are 
  14. endlessly translated into each other in that experience which 
  15. we call consciousness. Our extended senses, tools, 
  16. technologies, through the ages, have been closed systems
